Common causes of a concussion

  • Acceleration-deceleration movements (motor vehicle accidents)

  • Striking the head against a hard surface

    • Falling on ice​

    • Falling on a slip 'n slide

    • Slipping on a wet spot (like food)

  • Head being struck by an object

- Paying attention for an extended period of time, especially to complete work responsibilities

- Keep you from losing your train of thought or saying "What was I saying?" in the middle of your sentence

Memory

- Remembering if you completed something or not

- Remembering if someone told you something or not

- Remembering if you told someone else something or not

- Remembering things you need to do

- Confidence related to changes in memory

- Using calendars, timers/alarms, to-do lists, and more to efficiently complete household chores and work responsibilities

Executive functioning

- Better awareness of deficits

- Planning, prioritizing and organizing to-do lists and work responsibilities such as projects and deadlines

Cognitive fatigue

- Training for strategies to decrease cognitive fatigue so you don't finish the day mentally drained

Mental slowness

- Training for strategies so you have time to complete work tasks, household chores, hobbies efficiently and accurately

Mindful Speech Therapy is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS). 

Ways we've helped patients since their concussion

- Helping patients return to the same position they helped prior to their concussion (either from workers compensation or an injury unrelated to work)

- Referring to specialists to best serve the patient (neurologists, counselors, physical medicine & rehabilitation Drs, physical therapists, etc.)

- Providing extensive education about a concussion diagnosis, how to prevent future concussions, common symptoms of a concussion

- Providing strategies to help with memory, attention, manage cognitive fatigue, decrease mental slowness, strategies for finding words, increase awareness of deficits, and more
