Aphasia

What is aphasia?

If you/your loved one has had a stroke, acquired brain injury or dementia, you may have aphasia. "Aphasia is a communication impairment that impacts identity and relationships because of difficulties speaking, understanding, reading and writing."

- Clearly articulating a message

- Understanding jokes and conversations with family

- Providing responses to common questions during medical appointments (i.e. name, DOB)

- Difficulty speaking clearly

- Producing sounds in the correct order

Writing/spelling

- Difficulty writing

- Difficulty with texting or emails

Understanding

- Answering yes/no questions

- Following directions

Reading

- Difficulty reading words, sentences &/or paragraphs

- Difficulty with numbers (i.e. reading a clock)
